E-statements : do they really save trees?

28 Oct

paperless statementYou must have got those emails, SMS and even calls from your bank, mobile service provider, credit card companies, insurance company and almost every other service company from where you expect a printed statement or bill at the end of the month. It asks you to do your bit for the planet by stopping paper statements and instead opt for the greener email option.

Some of them even go an extra-step to make you feel guilty. A life insurance company tells you that you are not leaving anything for your children by  cutting down forests for your print statements! What do you feel? Or some try to bribe you into accepting paperless statement. Citi offered automatic entry into a sweepstakes – you not only save trees, you may even get enough money for maintaining your garden! My credit card provider offered me 500 reward points if I go green! (1000 reward points can be redeemed for a set of crayon pencils!) Continue reading

West Bengal on tourist map!

27 Jun

West Bengal despite its beaches, hill stations, religious places, handicrafts, tea gardens, historical places, wildlife destinations has not been able to be attract tourists for a number of reasons but nothing more than state government apathy.

With the wind of change in the political scenario, there is a possibility that the new people in power might work on putting West Bengal on top of the tourist map. Sultan Ahmed, the recently appointed Union Minister of State for Tourism has righly pointed out that West Bengal does not feature in the choice of destinations of even domestic travellers because of the lack of marketing and proper infrastructure. Bangladesh rewinds clock to save energy

20 Jun

dstUnable to cope with massive load-sheddings, Bangaldesh joins the group of about 70 countries including Pakistan which set clocks forward to use daylight better and save energy.

Bangladesh’s daylight saving time (DST) started at 11pm (23:00) local time on Friday, June 19, 2009. The clocks moved one hour forward at this time to midnight (00:00) between June 19 and June 20.

“This means Bangladeshis would practically begin their work an hour earlier than usual. Many establishments that run till sundown would actually close before sundown and thus reduce pressure on power demands,” The Daily Star newspaper said on the enforcement of a government decision taken last month. The Top 10 Lists makes the news!

1 May

180px-time_100Its again time for all the magazines to come up with different rankings and lists.

Recently, there were quite a few of these lists in the news. Earlier this month, a British men’s magazine called FHM published the list of world’s sexiest women based on a poll that attracted ten million voters from all across the globe.

The list is topped by the ‘flatty batty’ Cheryl Cole, who knocked last year’s winner Megan Fox to the second position in FHM’s sexiest women list. ‘X man’ star Cheryl, married to footballer Ashley Cole, is the first British woman to top the list in last three years

Other sexy beauties in the list are Anna Friel, Kristin Kreuk, Elisha Cuthbert, supermodel Adriana Lima, Keeley Hazell, Britney Spears (shocking) and yummy mummy Jessica Alba.

Then comes the surprise! Frieda Pinto of Slumdog Millionaire made it to tenth position, the only Indian in the Top 10! And this is not the only 10 million thinking so! Last month, Pinto was also voted among the top five Hollywood sexiest women by a men’s magazine and was in contention to be the world’s most beautiful woman in a poll by Vanity Fair magazine.

Its not surprising that she is walking the ramp for many international fashion lines and getting offers from top Hollywood film-makers. That is expected as she is a new face in the industry and she must be still quite inexpensive considering her success. However, her being on the list of the Top 10 Sexiest Women in the world is quite hard to digest.

Time 100 is one of the more respected lists and is an annual feature. Three Indians have made it to the Time 100 list of the World’s Most Influential People – Oscar winning Indian music director A R Rahman of Slumdog Millionaire fame, his Sri Lankan co-performer MIA of the hit O Saya song and Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani. This list to be published in the May 11 issue of the magazine is picked by the Editors of the magazine.

British premier Gordon Brown makes it to the second spot, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is in the eighth place, Pakistan army chief Ashfaq Kayani is sitting pretty at the 19th position, just a spot ahead of President Barrack Obama. I will really like to know how Mr. President thinks of this!

The magazine also conducted an online poll. However, that poll was heavily hacked into by a mysterious bunch of hackers from the influential Web message board 4chan.or and was topped by moot – the 21-year-old creator of the board!  Not stopping at making moot the winner with 16,794,368 votes using Autovoter scripts beating the likes of Barack Obama, Vladimir Putin and Oprah Winfrey, the hackers edited the entire top ranks to leave a crypted message. To read a detailed blog on how this was done go here.

Sometime back Newsweek published the list of the 50 Most Powerful People in the world. According to the list, Barrack Obama is the most powerful person on earth followed by Hu Jintao and Nicolas Sarkozy. Sonia Gandhi is at 17th position ahead of  Warren Buffet at 19th position. followed by Pakistan’s Army Chief Gen. Ashfaq Kayani.

Although India‘s political scene is riven by factions, Congress remains the strongest national force, and the Italian-born widow of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi rules it unchallenged. In the world’s largest democracy, she’s queen.

Shah Rukh Khan is the only other Indian in the list at 41st position. Newsweek reckons him to be the world’s biggest movie star.

This list is probably the only place where Osama bin Laden and The Dalai Lama are together. Infact, the Worl’s Most Wanted beats the Tibetan Leader to the 42nd position ahead by 4 places.

BusinessWeek came out with the Indian version of the Most Powerful People. The list also includes a blogger! Amit Verma of makes it to the list as a representative of the blogging community. His blog is on my Firefox Bookmarks Tab.

These lists may create controversies or draw criticism from people who dont find Freida sexy but are good reads to keep updated about who are standing out in the crowd and making themselves heard.

I have again deleted my last blog. And I have again installed wordpress to start again. Yes, this is probably the twenty-fifth (or 26th) time I have done that.

But then, this is my blog. I have paid hosting and my own domain. I may do as I wish! If only…I could have done the same thing at office.

Just as always, I will blog on anything and everything. I will like to blog on technology but I love to comment on politics also. Sometimes after watching a good movie, I wish to share my views on it.  I will like to write about the latest sales call I made or the my current favourite place to eat out.

This is my blog.
